Lollypops, Les Sucettes, and Las Bombas Tamarindos
France Gall in “Les Sucettes”
I recently returned from Mexico with a bag of fifty Bomba Tamarindos, a.k.a. delightful tamarind lollypops with chili pepper centers. Disappointingly when I got back to my Internet connection at home and looked up the tamarindos online I found out that the very brand I invested in are on the top of the list for lead contamination. Since then they have sat in the same light gray Mexican plastic bag I bought them in, untouched. Yes half of them are gone, but I ate those before I knew about the lead stuff. Feeling sad about my tamarindos, and not having anything better to do since I couldn’t eat one, I googled lollypops, tamarindos, and then, because I was throwing around different languages, put in the French “les sucettes.” All my concern for tamarindos evaporated when I found this movie. Seeing this French pop star from the 60s, who understands my love of lollys, although hers is for l’anis, or anise, flavor, warmed my heart, as I felt not alone in my suffering. France says when, “the creamy sugar
flavored with anise sinks in Annie’s throat, she’s in paradise,’ and I have to wonder if Annie ever got to try tamarind and chile.
